CBD is an abbreviation for cannabidiol, which is a chemical compound from the Cannabis sativa plant. Basically, it’s a derivative of the marijuana or hemp plant, and is a naturally occurring substance that’s used in products such as oils and edibles to impart a feeling of relaxation and calm. Unlike the major active ingredient in marijuana–THC–CBD does not produce psychoactivity.

In fact, CBD isn’t designed to get you high like smoking marijuana. Because the cannabis plant is made up of both THC and CBD, products that are formulated with the latter are designed to not promote any euphoric effects. However, every person reacts differently when using CBD, therefore it’s likely that one individual may experience a sense of sedation or altered states, whereas another person isn’t affected at all.

Typically, those who have side effects to anti-inflammatories such as Tylenol or Advil are the ones who react to CBD, yet it’s only about 5% of the population. It’s also wise to buy third-party tested CBD products for quality assurance purposes, mainly due to the fact the FDA doesn’t regulate CBD and the possibility of acquiring a product that’s more or less potent and may also contain some THC.
